Abstract :
A new technique is applied to the determination of the modal fields and propagation constants of weakly guiding step-profile square- and rectangular-core optical waveguides. This technique is a refinement of the colocation method using harmonic decomposition along the core-cladding boundary, and is compared with the Fourier decomposition method. The cutoff wavelength for the second mode is determined using the new technique and is compared with the finite element method value
