Changes in the work environment and in the traditional rungs to success brought about by increasing global competition, which has pressured leading American companies to place more emphasis on profitability, are discussed. The different career tracks traditionally found in manufacturing companies are examined. Strategies for building skills that lead to increased respect and influence throughout the industry are described.<>
