Abstract
An Er3+-doped fluorophosphate glass fibre amplifier has been constructed for the first time. Its fundamental gain and noise characteristics have been characterised. This amplifier can amplify an 8 channel WDM signal in the 1532-1560 nm wavelength region with a gain non-uniformity of 1.1 dB. In this case, the average signal gain and the noise figure of the fibre are 8.2 dB and <6 dB, respectively
