Abstract
Summarizes the results of a study on the effects of the electrostatic field and their repercussions on the work of station maintenance personnel and HT line riggers. In general, the effects of the electrostatic field are felt either in the form of steady state AC current induced in the body, or in the form of very short surges of current. During work performed in stations and on HT lines, the steady state AC current induced in the body rarely goes as high as the safety margin of 5 mA. Current surges, however, can reach charge levels of several microcoulombs and inconvenience workers. Tests have been performed at Hydro-Quebec to evaluate the efficiency of conductive clothing, conductive boots and other means of protection against the effects of the electrostatic field. The results are presented in this report.
