Abstract :
A cost effective repeaterless system with remote pumping in a single fibre is reported. Omitting dedicated pump fibres, 490 km transmission is demonstrated at 2.488 Gbit/s with a fibre loss of 87.4 dB. The system employs a remote preamplifier and dispersion compensating fibre, but no remote post-amplifier
