Abstract
Whitham´s method has been developed for waves in dispersive media. In the original form, the method describes frequency of a traveling wave but not its amplitude. Besides, within a framework of real waves, the method is inconsistent since the amplitude and frequency are ambiguous. Using analytic signals and analytic waves, we justify the method and generalize it for amplitudes
