Abstract
A penalty function method has previously been developed which maintains low sidelobes and prevents weight jitter in linearly-constrained minimum-variance broadband adapted beam-patterns. As originally proposed the technique requires a unique weighting matrix to be computed for each look-direction. A simplified version is described which avoids this limitation by pre-steering the sensor signals to reduce the problem to that of the broadside case. Extension of the proposed method to cater for arrays which spatially undersample the impinging signal wavefronts is also illustrated. Results for both simulated and real data are presented which illustrate the improvement in array performance that can be obtained with the simplified algorithm
