Abstract :
The First IEEE Women in Electromagnetics (WIEM) Workshop was held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 5–8, 2009. It was organized by Cynthia Furse, University of Utah; Parveen Wahid, University of Central Florida; and Elena Semouchkina, Penn State University. The WIEM Workshop was planned to target young scientists - MS, PhD, post-doctoral, and early stage researchers - both male and female, to provide a stimulating atmosphere to learn, present, discuss, and exchange ideas. WiEM was organized as a gender-related activity, with all lectures being given mainly by female scientists, both leading experts and younger researchers, working in the area of electromagnetics. With this selection of instructors, the workshop was intended to serve the purpose of improving the entry and the retention of women in the very complex, mathematically intense field of electromagnetics.
