Abstract
System performance degradation due to the finite intermediate frequency (IF) is analyzed for an optical PSK (phase shift keying) synchronous heterodyne receiver. Analysis of the finite IF includes the effect of both the IF and the postdetection filtering. The theoretical study reveals that when the IF center frequency is set at f/sub IF/=2/T(T=bit time) and the IF filter bandwidth is adjusted to be 2f/sub B/=2/T, the finite IF introduces 0.2 and 0 dB sensitivity penalties for single- and two-pole baseband filters, respectively.<>
