Abstract :
The reader will find in this annual review a wealth of information covering the state of the art in hardware end software and ranging from devices to systems. Over the past several months, a few outstanding trends have been reinforced. The ¿digitization of America¿ (and other advanced nations) is continuing with little indication of a slowdown. Very large-scale integration promises to enhance this digital trend as it enables the wedding of computers and instrumentation and the wider dispersal of computer power to nooks and crannies previously unthought of. The computer is thus insinuating its way into everything from electronic funds transfer and the power utilities to the factory floor.
