Abstract :
Many utilities and control centers are now implementing the new interoperability CIM standards since it facilitates model and data exchange. In accordance with application use cases, application profiles are projected out of standard CIM primitives and relationships. The CIM standard allows high granularity customization for designing CIM profiles for applications. The process of projecting application profiles is time consuming, tedious and error-prone. The other option would be use of common power system models (CPSM). However, these models are quite application specific and hence have commitments at low granularity therefore being less flexible. The approach in this paper therefore attempts to adopt golden mean for better size of granularity by applying the concept of viewpoints. The methodology devises two dimensions in the CIM profile management namely Component viewpoint (CVP) and Application viewpoint (AVP). The CVP defines components, which project a group of CIM classes of moderate granularity. These components can offer reusability across multiple applications during the making of application specific AVP profiles. The proposed concept is illustrated by applying it to a contingency analysis power system application.
