Abstract :
Synchronous generators present a particular problem in terms of prevention of islanding, because active anti-islanding is more difficult to apply than it is in inverters. In this paper, two synchronous generator installations are explored. Neither has any form of active anti-islanding; instead, both rely on very narrow frequency trip setpoints to reduce the size of their nondetection zones and the risk of island formation. The transient behavior of islands supported by these generators for different loading conditions are explored in detail via simulation, and their nondetection zones are quantified.
