Abstract
This paper presents the modeling and simulation of AC series dynamic resistor protection for a permanent magnet synchronous generator wind power plant and it describes the studies of its performance under short circuit faults. The performance of the protection scheme is tested with and without switching control and in combination with the AC damping load under switching control. The results indicate that the protection scheme is only effective under switching control, otherwise it leaves the generator, and hence the network unstable. If switching control is not adapted, the generator goes out of step leading to loss of synchronisation and therefore instability of the system.
