Abstract :
Using three microprocessors rather than one costs less and makes for easier software development, say the designers of the new QYX word-processing typewriter. Their cost argument is based on the assumption that even if LSI die prices go to zero, the cost of chip packaging and board mounting comes out to a fixed price per pin. That being so, they feel they can get more intelligence with three 40-pin processors than with one 40-pin processor and two 40-pin peripheral I/O extenders.
