Computers: A second chance for computer-aided instruction: What networking promised but didn´t deliver may be developed at the local level as hardware costs drop

Discusses the influence of decreasing hardware costs on future development of CAI projects. The developments of suitable courseware are dealt with, outlining three main categories of authoring concepts (pre-guessed student responses, discovery-oriented approach and an approach by which the student becomes a learning strategist). Some of the major CAI development centres are surveyed and results achieved with Plato and Ticcit projects are outlined. An outlook into future developments is presented.
