Abstract
The following approaches to CAI based on specialised uses of the computer for supplementing the teacher are discussed: computer as `eyeglasses´ and `mirror´; computer as `articulate expert´; computer as home library; computer as low-cost simulator; and computer as `menagerie´ (teaching basic reading and math skills).
