The author traces the society´s development decade by decade, highlighting the systems, technology, and professional interests that guided the society´s growth in membership and services. He begins with the society´s roots in the activities of committees formed in the mid-forties by the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers, but sets the official start date in 1951, when the IRE created the Professional Group on Electronic Computers.<>
