  • Abstract
In the 15 years since the National Academy of Engineering was established as part of the century-old National Academy of Sciences, the engineering group has grown and seemingly prospered. On paper it is part of the apparatus for advising the Federal Government on scientific and technical matters. Election to membership in the National Academy of Engineering ¿ which in 1979 was composed of 950 U.S. citizens and 74 foreign associates ¿ is widely recognized as a badge of professional achievement.
