Technology and policy: Spectrum asks questions of Carter, Reagan, and Anderson: This year´s contenders for the U.S. presidency give their views on technology and engineering issues

Voters in this year´s Presidential election can choose among three candidates-President Jimmy Carter on the Democratic line, Ronald Reagan on the Republican, and John li. Anderson, independent ¿ each with different ideas of technology and its place in society. To acquaint readers with their ideas, Spectrum drew up a list of questions and submitted it to each candidate. The topics covered are energy, innovation, productivity, research and development, the space program, defense, pensions for mobile professionals, and engineering and science education. Mr. Carter and Mr. Anderson replied. Ronald Reagan chose not to reply to the questionnaire. Instead, the Reagan stuff supplied official policy statements on a range of topics. In addition, Spectrum received permission from the National Society of Professional Engineers to reprint Mr. Reagan´s answers to questions that NSPE submitted to the candidates. These two sources have been used to give readers Mr. Reagan´s views on a number of the questions. His views on the rest were unavailable at press time.
