Abstract
This article discusses the achievement of a European collaboration in a significant reduction of quartz crystal oscillator noise floor. The collaboration from the FEMTO-ST Institute, CNRS, France demonstrate for the first time in 15 years an oder of magnitude in the noise floor reduction over commercial crystal oscillator. The 5 MHz crystal double-oven prototype, which has a flicker frequency modulation (EFM) floor of 2.5 x 10-14, opens the door to ultra-high stability oscillators for telecommunications, instrumentation and space applications.
