Three-phase generating and transmitting systems have been employed on so extensive a scale that the capital and operating costs may be fairly closely determined for any given conditions. Of late years, however, serious and well-backed proposals have been made which have comprised as a prominent feature, the generation and transmission of single-phase electricity.¹
