Abstract :
In this paper, a self-compensating power-flow controller for energy storage system (ESS) is designed to enhance frequency stability in islanded power systems (IPS). With this novel controller for ESS, the transient frequency oscillation can be grandly limited in IPS. It helps to greatly improve power system stability, including the frequency oscillation caused by step loads in a power system with finite power capacity. The errors from preset control parameters and measurements in the controller can be automatically self-compensated to avoid energy leakage from ESS and thus save lifetime of ESS. The principle, architecture, and parameterization of the proposed controller are investigated and analyzed. The effectiveness of the designed self-compensating power-flow controller has been verified by simulations in a system model of a multisource IPS. Also, the reliability and implementation issues about this controller´s application in ESS are discussed.
