Abstract :
The compound interferometer is a well-known multiplicative receiving array. This paper shows that its product pattern can be made equal to the power pattern of a conventional linear array with uniform element weighting. Moreover, the compound interferometer has fewer elements, effectively a thinned array. The thinning factor improves as the size of the arrays increases. It is also shown that the method can be extended to planar arrays with very significant thinning as the array size increases.
