    Pioneering work in iconic languages is briefly recounted, and arguments regarding the feasibility of their use as programming languages are examined. In particular, their usefulness to computer professionals and for large programs is discussed. Approaches to designing good iconic interfaces are examined. Progress to date in iconic programming research is summarized.<>
