  • Abstract
The use of video-based surveillance systems in combination with an intelligent technical automatic image-processing system for metropolitan railways, to alert the operator´s service staff is considered today by many viable and promising technologies for both purposes. Therefore, for the first time worldwide, the Dresden University of Technology, in cooperation with TelSys, had developed a video image-processing safety kernel, employing only algorithms that permit safety analyses that are traditionally performed for electronic signaling systems. The basic idea of the video guideway intrusion detection system (GIDS) consisted of using standard railway-proven video cameras to supervise critical areas of the infrastructure.
