Abstract
Leading the blind: A miniature TV camera and a stimulator belt are part of a ¿talking¿ experimental microprocessor-based system that is being tested as a walking aid for blind persons. The prototype apparatus, being developed at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Sciences in San Francisco, recognizes obstacles, describes them in synthesized speech, and indicates their direction and distance through signals to a 16-position electromechanical belt worn by the blind person.
