Abstract :
Discusses problems encountered in the definition and publication of hardware and software standards, mainly due to the conflict of interests between users and producers of computing equipment and also due to institutional conflicts. The 1981 status of representative microcomputer standards is illustrated and standards under discussion are outlined.
