Abstract :
Discusses more compact and efficient machines are in the offing as superconducting generators about to reach the field. Prototypes with power ratings between 20 and 50 megawatts have been tested in the United States, the Soviet Union, and Japan. The Westinghouse electric Corp. of Pittsburgh, PA, supported by the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, is building a prototype 300 MVA superconducting generator for installation at the Gallatin power plant of the Tennessee Valley Authority. It will be the first commercial installation of its kind.
