Abstract
In connection with IEEE Spectrum´s annual review of electrotechnology, an analysis is presented from four different perspectives. Taylor L. Booth discusses why software has become the limiting factor in computer applications. Tom L. Powers outlines the ways in which VLSI will reduce bandwidth costs and make complex services possible. James M. Early indicates that the trends in solid-state devices-smaller size, lower power consumption, greater complexity within devices-will continue in 1984. Robert A. Bell discusses the directions of energy research and the uncertainties and perception of risk which hold back energy technology explorations.
