Abstract :
Before 1972, getting the results of the November elections to the home-television viewer was largely a mechanical activity, with sometimes inaccurate and perhaps boring results. In the early 1960s TV studios that broadcast the election results resembled small-town ballparks. Races were listed on large boards with slots for numbers. Fifty or more human pages ran around the boards trying to put the numbers in the right slot.
