Medical ultrasonics: As new techniques are perfected, ultrasound extends its usefulness from diagnosis to research, therapy, and even surgery

The principles and use of ultrasonic scanning are explained. Doppler systems and combined techniques (duplex scanning) are also described, as are three-dimensional techniques that are as yet in the research stage. The applications discussed include obstetrics; tumor detection; blood-flow imaging; ultrasonic imaging as a surgical aid; tissue characterization; and physical therapy.
