Abstract
It is examined how the responses to directional template matching masks can be interpolated to give optimum signals. Formulae are derived which cover the cases of `1-vector´ and `2-vector´ features, typified respectively by edge and line segments. `m-vectors´ with m >2 are likely to be rare. And it appears that corners and most other features should be classed as 1-vectors. These considerations mean that the solutions arrived at for 1-vectors and 2-vectors will solve the foreseeable problems of signal interpolation between mask responses. Thus a useful nonarbitrary solution has been found for determining how to calculate combined responses for n-mask operators
