Abstract :
The role that infant monitors are playing in combatting the sudden-infant-death syndrome is discussed. The monitors, which at first relied solely on impedance pneumography, have been supplemented with electrocardiography, whereby electrodes detect electric signals produced by contractions of the heart. Some of the advanced monitors now on the market are described. Research efforts aimed at lowering the cost of the monitors are surveyed.
