Karmarkar´s algorithm: A threat to simplex? An elegant new method of solving linear equations has yet to be thoroughly tested

The way in which the approach outlined by N. Karmarkar (see Combinatorica, vol.4, no.4, 1984) departs from the simplex method is sketched. The questions that have been raised about the algorithm in the absence of full documentation are discussed.
