Abstract
The powers transmitted and lost at an abrupt discontinuity in planar guides are calculated numerically using the beam propagation method for the TE-modes. Discontinuities include changes in core thickness and refractive index. Symmetric and asymmetric waveguides are considered. Comparison of results with those obtained by other techniques shows a general agreement.
