Abstract :
The influence of PMD on soliton transmission at 40 Gbit/s, is numerically investigated. Maximum transmission distances at 1 dB eye closure penalty are calculated for different values of the chromatic dispersion parameter D and the polarisation dispersion parameter Dp . It is found that for Dp⩽0.1 ps/√km the effects of PMD are negligible, whereas for Dp⩾0.6 ps/√km the transmission distances are severely limited. Sliding-frequency filters are shown to improve the system performance, for Dp<0.6 ps/√km
