Abstract :
Running attention is the routine maintenance carried out in order that rolling stock may operate in service with safety and reliability. The amount and nature of running attention given are determined in such a way as to secure the maximum degree of reliability consistent with a reasonable cost. The methods adopted on the London Transport railways are described in some detail by way of illustration, with particular reference to the conditions of operation on the system. The general principles underlying these methods are outlined, and examples quoted of how these principles have been applied on other systems. The influence of advances in design upon running attention is discussed, and the importance of close co-operation between those responsible for design and for running attention is emphasized.
