  • Abstract
Current patenting strategies rely on analyzing a portfolio of patents and check for white spaces within the landscape for future patent applications. This paper suggests that patenting strategies can be formulated using databases from other sources and correlate that back to the patent analysis. This leverages on the phenomenon found in technology life cycle. In this paper, we tracked the publications in major journals of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters and identify their main areas of research. We then map the corresponding time slices in the patent application domain to derive a linkage between them. We found that journal publications are around 5 years ahead of the patent applications in the field of research of SAW filters. This provides a good clue to patenting strategies to build up their patent portfolios for technologies with similar technology life cycle trends.
