A truly world class benchmark for tomorrow´s engineers will include qualities of leadership, entrepreneurism and technical foresight. The author believes that the Engineering Council´s standards and routes to registration (SARTOR ´97) is a fresh step towards a new crop of engineering professionals with designer characteristics for management. The author discusses the for and against of the management characteristics development. The author then discusses engineering management in relation to chartered engineers, and the requirements to become world class engineers.
