Abstract :
A modular circuit for determining the leading one in a binary word is described. The circuit. Which was principally designed for encoding binary data into a binary logarithm format, can also be used for floating point normalisation. Its similarity to the Manchester carry adder can be exploited to provide fast `lookahead´ or `carry-skip´ stages where necessary
