Abstract :
Prior to recognising online handwritten symbols obtained from a digitising tablet it is necessary to perform preprocessing to clean the data of redundant samples and smooth the recorded pen movements. This is a nonlinear operation as certain features must be retained and other similar features must be removed. Here an algorithm is described that has been found particularly effective at performing this preprocessing.
