Abstract
The manipulation of samples in a linear system may be studied by a transform method closely analogous to the Laplace transform. The pulse transfer function relates a sequence of samples at the output of a system to the sequence producing it. The theory is presented in language familiar to the engineer and without the formalities of mathematical rigour. Special attention is paid to servo systems, and particularly to those containing a finite time-delay within the feedback loop. The problem of synthesis is considered and a new method of stabilization is described. A short list of transforms is given in an appendix.
