Abstract
An atomic-scale model is developed to analyze interlayer coupling in permalloy/silver/permalloy GMR spin valves. The coupling in a smooth interface spin valve is assumed to be anti-ferromagnetic due to interlayer electron scattering. With rough silver/permalloy interfaces, the coupling remains anti-ferromagnetic even with the enhanced magnetostatic energy
