Abstract :
It is shown that a commercial fluorescent tube can be intensity modulated to provide high-intensity blue and UV pulses from uncoated areas of the tube that have durations comparable to and shorter (down to microsecond range) than those of commercial light-emitting diodes in IR, red, green, and yellow. The mains frequency (50 or 60 Hz) needed to be filtered out from the detected signal in order to provide this. However, fluorescent operation from a DC supply would obviate this need.<>
