Abstract
An electric powering system that consists of plug-in modules was developed about ten years ago to overcome certain limitations of the traditional hardwired electric reticulation used in South African gold mines. The applications in which this equipment has been used are reported and the reliability, safety, and costs of this approach compared with hardwired electric reticulation are examined. Improvements too the basic design, some of which have already been implemented, are also discussed
