Abstract :
A novel miniature planar monopole antenna with multiband operation for penta-band wireless wide area network (WWAN) applications is presented. The antenna fabricated on a ceramic substrate consists of a tuning strip and two distinct pairs of driven and coupled strips, and occupies a compact size of only 83(L)??6(W)??0.8(H)??mm3 to be easily embedded inside the laptop computer as an internal antenna. By properly designing the antenna operated as a shorted monopole, two wide bands at about 820-985 and 1700-2180-MHz suitable for GSM850/900 and DCS/PCS/UMTS operations can be achieved. Omnidirectional radiation patterns with appreciable gain over the penta-band are obtained so that the proposed antenna is well suited to be embedded inside the laptop computer for WWAN applications.
