Abstract :
The paper describes the design and construction of a new high-speed cathode-ray oscillograph for recording single transients. A demountable construction is used which permits various types of deflector systems to be employed, and allows the current in the final spot to be measured by a Faraday cage moved to intercept the beam. Recording is by the direct action of electrons on a photographic plate. The temporal resolution is measured from oscillograms of voltages of frequencies up to 9080Mc/s, the limiting resolution being 2 × 10¿13sec per spot width: this figure is in agreement with design predictions.
