Abstract
It is widely held that expert systems are small systems and that the methods used to build them do not scale up to the sort of large commercial systems necessary for their mature acceptance. The author looks at prototyping from the point of view of the traditional system development life cycle and shows how the latter can be modified to incorporate fast prototyping in building large systems which may incorporate expert systems. He also introduces a classification of different approaches to prototyping
