Abstract
Fuel cells (gas-fuelled batteries) have been struggling for commercialisation since Sir William Grove pioneered them in 1839. Phosphoric acid (H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/) fuel cells (PAFCs) of mature design have rather high costs, but a niche market, e.g. hospital power or remote telephone exchanges.
