Abstract
In a paper published recently Samant and Shearman (see IEEE Spectrum, vol. 36, p. 82-86, 1999) discuss several techniques for performing spectral analysis using short data records to overcome the problem of caller ID identification. They fail, however, to mention the nonlinear least squares (NLS) method. The NLS method is considered and is shown to perform similarly to the best method proposed by Samant and Shearman while being simpler computationally
